Historic New England’s Book Prize recognized as a 2012 Honor Book A Landscape History of New England (MIT Press) edited by Blake Harrison and Richard W. Judd. Three monographs or exhibition catalogues are recognized for advancing the understanding of the architecture, landscape, and material culture of New England and the United States from the seventeenth century to the present.

One of the book’s 23 chapters is my essay “The Evolution of Twentieth-Century Boston’s Metropolitan Landscape.”  This essay provide a brief overview of some material included in my forthcoming book The Hub’s Metropolis: Greater Boston’s Suburban Development from Railroad Suburbs to Smart Growth.

A Landscape History of New England provides a provocative overview of the development of New England’s human-made landscape, covering such subjects as forests, farming, beach vacations, the impact of pollution on coastal waters, toxic wastes, industrial landscapes, and townscapes. Illustrations and maps flesh out the stories. General readers, academics, and students will find both a fascinating survey of environmental history as well as dozens of revealing historical tidbits.
